The National’s Olivier stage incorporates a “drum revolve”, often notoriously failing to work, but which, when functional, allows sets and casts to vanish through the middle of the stage and reappear elsewhere. The potential of this for a story that moves between above and below is brilliantly exploited [in Hadestown] by designer Rachel Hauck and director Rachel Chavkin.
