Horror but no self-pity in recollections of the Great War

First World War veteran Richard Hawkins, photographed as a young man, recalls the horrors of the trenches in The Last Tommies

 

In episode two, “The Battle of the Somme”, the illusions had gone. A woman who had, as a young girl, volunteered as a nurse in a field hospital, found herself on her first day lugging buckets full of amputated limbs from the ward to the incinerator.
