A theatregoer I know – a trusting soul – tends to believe what people in plays say. If a character insists that he can’t have sent the incriminating texts because, as everyone can see, he has no fingers, the later revelation that voice activation was employed feels to her a betrayal of the contract between dramatist and audience.
