Rock music genealogists – and there is a thriving guild – like to point out that drummer Robert Wyatt’s group, Matching Mole, derived its improbable name from the French phrase machine molle. Wyatt never quite recovered from being fired from his first group, Soft Machine, so the reference was both poignant and pointed.
