Faith and medicine crash head-on in The Children Act, a high-minded moral drama adapted by Ian McEwan from his 2014 novel and directed by Richard Eyre. It belongs to the same school of polished, hardback cinema as On Chesil Beach, McEwan’s other screen adaptation this year, and shares some of its faults.
