Once a seminarian at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, the playwright Brian Friel (1929-2015) left priesthood training, and, ultimately, Catholicism. But his plays are deeply marked by his birth faith, routinely featuring a priest or a nun. Aristocrats (1979) has one of each.
