Wow. Who says the BBC is dumbing down? The prime- time drama offering for Bank Holiday Monday was a spectacular production of King Lear (28 May), Shakespeare’s darkest tragedy, directed by Richard Eyre.

Anthony Hopkins (pictured) was Lear, as compelling in fragile vulnerability as in echoing and tyrannical grandeur.
