As the kind of radio critic brought up to believe that the words “Radio 4 Comedy” are a contradiction in terms, I approached the first tranche of Daliso Chaponda’s four-part examination of the UK’s relationship with Africa (2 May) in a highly sceptical state. Naturally, the Malawian-born Chaponda has certain advantages. The most obvious is that his skin-tone allows him to get away with jokes that a white comedian wouldn’t dare attempt.
