All aboard for Britain: Will Self's 1,000-mile bus ride


 

The data brought back by the scenic traveller, Will Self assured us at the start of this engaging 10-parter (29 January; continues to 9 February), was dependent on the means of transport. Stevenson had gone by donkey. Daniel Defoe had his horse. Self’s 1,000-mile trip “the length and breadth of Britain” would, on the other hand, be accomplished by bus. In prospect, or so we inferred, lay a vista of steamed-up windows, wayside caffs and the people who gathered inside them.
