Baby steps in human kindness


 

“Only connect,” E.M. Forster famously remarked. The person doing the connecting in this excellent World Service feature (23 January) was swiftly revealed to be seven months old and to communicate either by smiling or yelling. This was baby Naomi, an instrument of the Canadian Roots of Empathy movement, set down in a class of nine and 10 year olds with the aim of encouraging them to recognise her emotional needs.
