Five years ago, the president of the Royal Academy, Christopher Le Brun, was hillwalking with the Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures, Desmond Shawe-Taylor, when he asked his companion what his dream exhibition would be. Without missing a beat, Shawe-Taylor replied: “Charles I, the king’s pictures.” And lo, it is about to come to pass.
