During the 1960s, at a time when European Marxists were prone to divide themselves into different tendencies, the French film-maker Jean-Luc Godard declared: “Je suis Marxiste, tendance Groucho.”
A new play by Richard Bean and Clive Coleman backdates the gag by a century, giving Marxism’s founder a home in which Groucho and his brothers would feel entirely welcome.
