The radio and TV presenter Lauren Laverne’s thoughtful documentary (8 October) began on the doorstep of her parents’ house on Wearside. Her father, Les, turned out to be a retired university lecturer with musical interests, whose youthful escapades included supporting Jimi Hendrix. The experience clearly had made him rather more indulgent of his then teenage daughter’s decision to throw over her place at college for the role of second guitarist in an all-girl pop group called Kenickie, though he did confess himself “unhappy” about her late-1990s relocation to London.
