The listeners assembled in this dense two-parter (26-27 September) were diehard fans of Radio 2. Their brief was to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the station’s founding, six weeks after the Marine Offences Act had cleared pirate competitors from the high seas, and their tributes mingled eager nationalism (“Could only have happened in the UK”) with evidence of the extraordinarily close-knit relationships that presenters formed with their audience.
