Boko Haram attack on town left 80 dead, says bishop

It is feared at least 80 people were killed when Boko Haram extremists struck the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri and the town of Madagali on 27 December with grenades and suicide bombers.

“The terrorists of Boko Haram arrived in different areas of Maiduguri, introducing themselves in some homes and killing the inhabitants, while in other areas they sent women and girls to blow themselves up among the people,” reported Bishop Oliver Dashe Doeme of Maiduguri.

A mosque was also attacked and a Muslim killed there. “Boko Haram is a sect that does not make a big distinction between Muslims and non-Muslims,” said Bishop Doeme. “Boko Haram kills whoever does not adhere to its ideology.”

The attacks came just days before President Muhammadu Buhari’s deadline to stamp out Boko Haram by 31 December.
