Strong voter mobilisation and politcal manoeuvring among mainstream parties blocked the anti-immigrant National Front in the second round of France’s regional elections last weekend, despite more support for the Front from formerly hostile Catholics, writes Tom Heneghan. The third-placed party – usually the Socialists – withdrew to give mainstream parties victory.
