Pope and Carney call for a more human economic system

THE GOVERNOR of the Bank of England and Pope Francis both stressed this week that the human person must be at the centre of the global economy.

The Pope made his remarks, later endorsed by Mark Carney,  to a conference organised by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace in Rome. Mr Carney was attending along with 70 world financial experts. The two-day conference, entitled “The Global Common Good: Towards a More Inclusive Economy”, was based on Pope Francis’ ideas in his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium.

Francis, who joined the partici­pants on Saturday, urged them to help reverse the current “throwaway” culture and put people at the centre of monetary strategies.

The participants issued a joint statement which said that “we must put people and their wellbeing at the centre of our economic and political life”.
