Bishops speak for the imprisoned


The Venezuelan bishops have rejected accusations that they are acting politically in demanding the release of dozens of students and activists who are in jail, writes Isabel de Bertodano.

In a statement read at the end of their plenary assembly last week the bishops said: “We are citizens and priests and have the right to fulfil our duties – to defend and promote human dignity and the common good.”

Some 160 politicians and students opposed to the Nicolás Maduro Government are in jail.
