Next month Pope Francis will produce his own document following two Synods of Bishops on the Family. It is expected to run to more than 100 pages and appear before Easter, with the most likely publication date 19 March, the feast of St Joseph and the anniversary of the inauguration of Francis’ pontificate.Both the 2014 and 2015 synods exposed seemingly irreconcilable differences among bishops over how the Church should minister to the family in its different contemporary guises. Francis pointed this out in his concluding speech to last October’s synod, saying that what appears normal to a bishop on one continent is “strange and almost scandalous” for a bishop from another.He therefore has his work cut out in trying to bring together the different viewpoints.
