TRAVELLING BACK to Rome from Lima, Pope Francis was forced to sit down and take a break during his in-flight press conference due to the plane hitting a rocky patch of air turbulence. 

It was, some remarked, a symbol of the ups and downs of the Pope’s visit to Chile and Peru, with the clerical sexual abuse crisis threatening to overshadow his message of hope to the people of those countries.
