Disputed readings after release of final synod document Premium

Cardinals have given contrasting interpretations of the final Synod on the Family document, in particular on whether it offers an opening on Communion for remarried divorcees. The two-year process culminated in a 94-paragraph document published last Saturday which included a “path of discernment” and an “internal forum” for the divorced and remarried which some priests and bishops already use to determine whether a person can be readmitted to the sacraments. The document did not, however, give a definitive answer on the question. Cardinal Walter Kasper, who has made proposals for a way back to Communion for divorced and remarried Catholics, told the Italian daily Il Giornale: “The door has been opened to the possibility of the divorced and remarried bein
