Paul didn’t just give the Christians in Corinth a list of instructions. He re-presented the actions of Jesus. Not just at the table, but in his missionary journeys, in his preaching, in his imprisonment and in his martyrdom. We need to remember, put back together again, the words and the actions of the Eucharist. Not just the spoken words, but all they signify in terms of passion and compassion. If God is a poet, is it too much to say that the ordained priest is his “poet in residence,” personifying the saving mystery in which we all believe but which has to be expressed in communion?
