I have known the silence of the marsh beyond Rye and Winchelsea,  and the silence of the little roads that led back into the downs. Silence of the Rother’s cool stream below the hill at Wittersham, on the road to Bodiam Castle. Silence of the fens at Ely. Silence out toward Norwich and Lady Julian.
