The living spirit


 

I once told a famous writer that I wanted to write a good book. She gasped in horror. “Don’t ever say that!” she said. “You’ll never write again.” When I imagine St. Luke sitting down to record his Gospel or the Acts of the Apostles, I cannot imagine how he actually began, deciding on that first word. He says that he did it by working with what had already been handed down.
