The emphasis of the Francis papacy has been on the poor, the sick and the outcasts. There are many ways that Justice and Peace groups can embrace this ‘agenda’ for the good of all Pope Francis is officially a pop icon after appearing on the Rolling Stone magazine cover with the headline: “The times they are a-changing”. The article looks at how the Pope has confounded expectations with the simplest of gestures. Indeed, his personal attention to the infirm and disabled people who gather for his ­audiences in St Peter’s Square, his visits to the homeless, his washing of the feet of prisoners and his advocacy of the cause of refugees, immigrants and trafficked women, children and men have all caught the world’s imagination.
