Christians attending a green summer school last week were told to “support their local beekeepers”, by Methodist preacher and apiarist Richard Bushby.

For many, that could be their local monks: Buckfast, Quarr and Ealing Abbey are among the Benedictine monasteries that keep bees in England. Buckfast even has its own strain of honeybee, named after the abbey, which was developed by a monk in the early twentieth century.
