As archipelagos go, the Philippines and the Shetland Islands couldn’t be further apart, both geographically and in climate. But neither is a stranger to extreme conditions. When one young Filipino fisherman found himself at the pointy end of northern weather last month, he also became the beneficiary of a charity that knows no earthly boundaries.

Roy – the only name he’s known by – broke his leg pulling nets aboard a large fishing vessel and was airlifted to Aberdeen, where he came to the notice of Apostleship of the Sea (AoS) chaplain Doug Duncan, who supervised his hospital care, offered moral and spiritual support, phone cards, rosary beads and chocolate bars and made sure that Roy’s family back home were taken care of. “Roy had just come out of surgery on my arrival,” said Doug, who put together an emergency kit.
