Scottish spirit celebrated in Rome
The Scots College in Rome commemorated the spiritual legacy of Scotland’s St John Ogilvie last week, the culmination of a year of events recalling the four-hundredth anniversary of his martyrdom in 1615.
Ogilvie, a Jesuit, was martyred for refusing to pledge allegiance to King James, and was hanged and drawn at Glasgow Cross. Before dying, he allegedly threw his rosary into the crowd and said: “If there be here any hidden Catholics, let them pray for me but the prayers of heretics I will not have.”
