An official announcement of the next British Ambassador to the Holy See is expected very soon.The Vatican, it is understood, has given its agreement to the UK government’s nomination. Sally Axworthy, an experienced diplomat who is currently in charge of the North African department of the Foreign Office, is the Whitehall choice. Her previous roles include leading the East Africa and Somalia unit along with postings in Germany, Russia and Iran.Her understanding of North Africa will be pertinent to her new role given the Pope’s calls for the international community to take action on the migrant crisis.
