Kingship and martyrdom are both referenced in a striking statue of St Edmund unveiled at Douai Abbey, Berkshire, as part of the Benedictine community’s 400th anniversary celebrations. The sculptor, Peter Eugene Ball, shows Edmund with the arrows traditionally associated with his martyrdom at the hands of Viking invaders in 869.
