A pioneering Catholic religious community faces an uncertain future as all but one of its members have moved on.For eight years the Cordate Community has worked in a multicultural area of inner city Birmingham. But today Fr Mark Van Beeumen, one of its founders, is living a solitary life in the community house in Aston and saying daily Mass alone.So he has launched a recruitment drive, inviting anyone over 22, prepared to pay their share of the living costs; be they consecrated, Religious or lay, male or female, to come and see what the work involves.Fr Mark, of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, sees his roles as building bridges and dealing with the district’s social problems, which include homelessness and poverty.
