When republicans launched an armed insurrection in Ireland in Easter Week 1916, Pope Benedict XV was horrified and wanted details of the causes of the conflict. The briefing document prepared for him by the then rector of the Pontifical Irish College in Rome, Mgr Michael O’Riordan, was displayed in Dublin for the first time last Friday as part of Culture Night 2015.La Recente Insurrezione in Irlanda (The Recent Insurrection in Ireland) was discovered in the archives of the Archdiocese of Dublin two years ago and is the only copy outside the Vatican Library. Other documents displayed at Clonliffe College showed how 21 priests from 10 parishes risked death to tend to the wounded in Dublin.
