Monasteries brew beer, convents produce wine. That’s the conclusion that Norbertine Sisters came to when they looked for new ways to finance their centuries-old convent in the Dutch town of Oosterhout. “Beer doesn’t belong in a convent,” Prioress Maria Magdalena told the daily de Volkskrant. “The Holy Spirit inspired us to plant a vineyard. Christ is the vine and we are the branches.” The nuns have planted vines of pinot blanc, pinot gris, chardonnay and pinot noir grapes at Saint Catherine’s Convent and aim to produce the first wine in 2018.
