Upheavals caused by political and religious earthquakes have played a large part in the history of Douai Abbey, now located between Reading and Newbury. So it was perhaps less than surprising that events this week in Calais forcing the closure of the Channel Tunnel led to guests celebrating the abbey’s 400th anniversary being stranded in the French capital.The monastery of English monks under the patronage of St Edmund was founded in Paris in 1615 when changes brought about by the Reformation in England and dissolution of the monasteries made life impossible for them in their own country.
