The actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, above, Oscar-nominated for Twelve Years a Slave, is currently starring at the National Theatre as the eponymous hero of Everyman, in a new version of the medieval morality play by Carol Ann Duffy, the Poet Laureate.Duffy sticks closely and wittily to the original. In this updating, golden-quiffed Goods – one of the characters representing objects and belonging – is no longer weighed down with sacks and bags (bling being liberated by virtual credit), and there is a persistent lament for environmental destruction.
