Did Cardinal Vincent Nichols miss his vocation as an auctioneer?On Monday night, at a fundraiser for the anti-slavery St Bakhita Initiative, the cardinal took charge of the prize auction with aplomb. He helped auction off a series of items, including semi-final tickets for the Wimbledon tennis tournament for £3,000 and a football shirt signed by the world’s greatest footballer, Pelé, pictured, for £1,550. Former BBC presenter Shelagh Fogarty, who had been compèring the evening, was so impressed that she remarked: “You’ve done this before.” The cardinal was particularly successful in helping auction off a holiday in a Tuscan villa for £9,000 even though it had an initial reserve price of £3,000.
