A poll earlier this month showed that Catholics are more likely to vote Labour in the forthcoming general election than any other faith group. This is consistent with other surveys of faith-group political affiliation. It does not, however, stop Catholics being among the top donors to the Conservative Party. The Sunday Times “Political Rich List” cited those who had given over £1 million to a political party. These include the Catholic Lord (Anthony) Bamford and his family, who own the JCB construction-machinery company, and have donated £3.6m to the Conservatives during 2010-14. Lord Bamford, educated at Ampleforth College, in North Yorkshire, was a donor to the 2010 papal visit to Britain. Another Catholic on the list is Sir Michael Hintze, the hedge-fund manager
