Vatican art is normally assumed to be the Sistine Chapel and glorious Renaissance frescoes. For the second time, however, the Holy See will join other countries in having a pavilion at the Venice Biennale, a major contemporary art exhibition.Among the three artists commissioned by the Vatican for Venice is Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva, 43, a London-based artist from Macedonia who uses organic materials in herer work.She has created a large architectural installation using as a covering a skin-like embroidery made using discarded animal parts. The Vatican stand is inspired by John’s gospel “In the beginning … the Word became flesh”, and Hadzi-Vasileva told us she started by reflecting on Jan and Hubert Van Eyck’s Adoration of the Mystic Lamb.
