Pod’s solitary witness


 
Was it the case of a prophet not being accepted in his home town or a church leader who could have been more collegial? The former Bishop of Lancaster, Patrick O’Donoghue, affectionately known as “Pod”, has said he still can’t understand why none of his fellow bishops supported him when his “Fit for Mission? Schools” report was published. It was a hard-hitting document, sent out to schools and dioceses, stressing the need for a stronger Catholic identity in schools – such as putting crucifixes in every classroom and stressing the Church’s ban on artificial contraception.
