In most walks of life, retirement normally beckons in the mid-sixties. In the Church, however, bishops are expected to remain in office until 75, sometimes longer.So it is understandable that some church leaders might imagine life without the burdens of office well before they step down, as 69-year-old Cardinal Vincent Nichols recently admitted.“I had a kind of daydream the other day,” he said in a homily at a solemn profession at the Poor Clare Convent at Arkley, in the London Borough of Barnet. “In the diocese we had been talking about the time, when it comes, at which a priest must lay down public duties.
