Bishop accuses leading sociologist of ‘pontificating’


 
How to address declining numbers and ageing clergy was on the agenda at the Church of England’s General Synod this week, with five reports discussed on the matter.  The sociologist Professor Linda Woodhead, right, of the University of Lancaster, has undertaken extensive research in this area but her work seems to be proving uncomfortable for some in authority.  In a discussion on BBC Radio 4’s Sunday programme last weekend, she said some of the solutions now being put forward by the Church sounded like “more of the same”.The Bishop of Willesden, Pete Broadbent, then sent out a pointed tweet that he was off to do some confirmations, adding: “… people finding faith without the help of pontificating sociologists”.
