Grand ordination


 
It is normally used for large-scale music concerts and is the venue for stand-up comedians such as Billy Connolly. But next month the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, will be the place where hands are laid on to ordain the next Bishop of Galloway, Fr William Nolan. The reason is down to practicalities: St Margaret’s Cathedral, Ayr, has a maximum capacity of just 300 while the Grand Hall can accommodate 960 spectators. His predecessor, Bishop John Cunningham, had been ordained in the diocese’s former and larger Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, which was closed in 2007 due to vandalism and declining attendance.
