Hugh Grant’s campaign to curb the excesses of the media has led to a friendship with a Catholic peer and her family, and next week it will give the actor the chance to return to his first love, amateur dramatics. The actor met Baroness (Sheila) Hollins – the mother of Abigail Witchalls, who was left paralysed by a knife attack in 2005 – through the Hacked Off campaign for stricter press regulation. Grant later met Lady Hollins’ son Nigel, who has a learning disability. “Hugh even came unannounced to Nigel’s fortieth birthday party,” Lady Hollins told us.  Now Grant is to appear with Nigel in a new play, to be put on at Sadler’s Wells in north London on Tuesday, about acting with a learning disability (pictured in rehearsal, right).
