Francis’ wise men


 
After being silenced by the Vatican for 30 years, the liberation theologian and former Franciscan priest Leonardo Boff is, The Tablet understands, now advising Pope Francis on the drafting of his next encyclical.The Pope’s message will centre on the environment and social justice, something in which Boff has become an expert – in 1992 he attended the Rio Earth Summit despite moves from the Vatican to stop him from doing so. In his latest online blog Boff mentions that Rio gathering and says that, without the union of reason and the heart, humankind will never be moved to love “Mother Earth” truly. “Pope Francis put it well: our civilisation is cynical because it has lost the capacity to feel the pain of the other,” he says.The 76-year-old Brazilian was
