World Homeless Day was also marked with a reception in the House of Lords last week, where the former presenter of BBC’s Newsnight, Jeremy Paxman, was among the guests. For a self-confessed atheist and rationalist, he has a lot of time for Christians, maintaining that they are more motivated and effective in charitable endeavour. He is a patron of both the Catholic homeless charity Caritas Anchor House, in London’s East End, and the Cardinal Hume Centre. Paxman said an Anchor House resident had told him that the charity was great because people there wished him “Good morning”. “Imagine a world where people don’t say ‘Good morning’. Most people don’t see the homeless,” said Paxman, who was brought up in a Salvation Army family. Wh
