Maintaining neutrality throughout the Scottish referendum debate has required a delicate balancing act by the hierarchy in Scotland.As we reported, Peter Kearney, the director of the Catholic Media Office, campaigned for a “yes” vote. Soon after the “no” vote was announced, the Scottish bishops issued a statement saying they “recognise and respect” the result. At the bottom of that statement were the contact details of Fr Tom Boyle of the Scottish bishops’ conference. The next day a letter from the Archbishop of Glasgow to Scottish Nationalists’ leader, Alex Salmond, former First Minister of Scotland, was released.
