It is almost unheard of for a director of news at the BBC to present one of his own programmes, but James Harding is stepping out from the shadows of management to present a Radio 4 documentary on Pope Francis. Harding, who was the first-ever Jewish editor of The Times, which he headed from 2007 to 2012, and who has been in his current job for the past year, is said to be fascinated by the Pope and has spent several weeks researching his programme. Among his interviewees are Cardinal Vincent Nichols and his predecessor in Westminster, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor. His programme, which is scheduled to be broadcast just before the Synod on the Family opens in Rome, signals a reinvigorated interest in faith issues at the BBC, which recently appointed Caroline Wyatt, its much respect
