Rising to the occasion


 
The word “conservative” hardly does justice to Fr Jean-Marie Charles-Roux, who has died at the age of 99. He was a firm believer in the Divine Right of Kings, the cause for the canonisation of Marie Antoinette, and, of course, the Tridentine Rite. Fr Charles-Roux was for many years resident preacher at London’s St Etheldreda’s, Ely Place. As a student in Rome, he often dropped into the Jesuit Church of Sant’ Ignazio to see Fr Felice Cappello SJ celebrating Mass. He confided to his friend Fr Alexander Lucie-Smith that Fr Cappello always said Mass “six inches off the ground, gliding effortlessly from one end of the altar to the other, as the Tridentine usage dictated.
