Sending questionnaires to the laity, exploring the role of women in the Church – in many ways Cardinal Edward Clancy, who died last weekend at the age of 90, was a man ahead of his time.In 1996 the then Archbishop of Sydney and president of the Australian Bishops’ Conference sent out 4,500 questionnaires to the country’s 28 dioceses to find out about attendance and the participation of women.
