When the Jesuits decided they were withdrawing from the Sacred Heart, Wimbledon, in south-west London, it fell to the Archdiocese of Southwark to work out who would lead one of the largest parishes in Britain. The Archbishop of Southwark, Peter Smith, appointed Mgr Nicholas Hudson (left), but after just three months it was announced he was to be a new auxiliary in Westminster.
